Basic Bike Care

If you are an avid cyclist, you know that getting on a well maintained bike is much more enjoyable to ride. I am going to give you some basic bike care instructions, in hopes that you’ll take care of your bike as needed. Here a few major things to keep up on.

Chain – When putting in serious miles you should check your chain for wear two to three times a month. Along with checking your chain it is important to clean and re-lube your chain almost every time you ride. These steps will prevent wear on your chain rings and cassette.

Tire Pressure – Every ride pump your tires up to the appropriate tire pressure for the conditions. Running tires with low pressure can cause rim damage along with flat tires. Aside from flats and rim damage it saves the side walls of your tire running them at the correct pressure.

Storage – A bike really isn’t that big. That’s a perfect reason to keep it in the garage or even better in the house. This will keep your bicycle nice and enjoyable to ride next time you get on it. Rusting of the chain, cables, frame, ext. occurs when you leave your bike in mother natures way.

Baby It – Treat your bike like you would your Ferrari if you have/ had one. Ride it as fast as you can but keep it clean and working perfect. It is just like a car turning over 150,000 miles there dents scratches, motor knocks, and rusting out. You HAVE to drive it but you really don’t like to. Well you don’t HAVE to ride your bike, so the better reason to keep it nice, because it will end up like that nasty old car. So don’t leave it in the yard for a night. Lean it against something other than the ground. Always wipe it down after the rain, simple things. If you just care about it a little bit you’ll enjoy your ride more.

Remember to clean your bike, but don’t loose your mind over it. Use your best judgment. If it was a nice day out and your bike still looks pristine after a ride; than don’t worry about it. If it was super nasty out then clean that puppy up. The better shape you keep your bicycle the more you will ride. The better shape you will be in, and the better overall life you will live. We are blessed to have such beautiful machines out in today’s day and age. So let’s keep them nice and ride the tires right off the wheels.
